When speaking about facial acne problems, inflamed acne is definitely one of the biggest concerns. Inflamed acne not only swells more leading to more pain in general, but it affects our appearance negatively when we have it and also after we have it as it tends to leave marks. Beyond this, inflamed acne can spread from one acne to all over our face if treatment is not done early on. This goes without saying that we must figure out the causes of inflamed acne and find ways to prevent it from happening.

What Are the Causes of Inflamed Acne?

Inflamed acne or Papulopustular acne happens when the sebaceous glands become clogged with bacteria growing inside until inflammation occurs under the skin’s surface.  Often, when we touch the acne we tend to notice pain around the area. Plus, inflamed acne can come in different forms such as as large acne, acne with pus, red inflamed acne or cystic acne (looks like boil on the skin)

The Main Causes of Inflamed Acne Are:

1. Causes from Hormones

The hormone that has a direct link to inflamed acne is Testosterone or commonly known as the primary male sex hormone. Especially during teen years, this hormone is likely to cause inflammation more than at any other times. For females, testosterone levels are highest when approaching menstruation or during pregnancy making it more likely to develop inflamed acne.  However, inflamed acne in males is usually more serious due to the higher testosterone levels.

2. Causes from Food

The types of food that can lead to acne are oily food, deep-fried food and dairy products from cow, cheese and butter. On the other hand, fresh vegetables and fruits both contain high levels of vitamin C and therefore help with reducing inflamed acne.

3. Causes from Our Own Genes

Our skin conditions and hormones are determined by our genes. Some families may have smooth and clear looking skin while other families may have more clogged and large pores due to higher levels of certain hormones. Additionally, some families may be more prone to oily skin that require treatments in other areas to cure.

4. Applying Makeup

Nowadays, there are so many cosmetic products being produced for customers. Of course, there are both those that are standardized and those that are not standardized. People with sensitive skin are more susceptible to developing allergies and irritations that can lead to acne information from cosmetic products. Therefore, we must always go for cosmetic products that are safe with a clear registered number.

5. From Squeezing Acne

Acne is a worrying problem for many people. This is especially true and displeasing when the clogged pores start spreading all over your face. Besides, it is difficult to avoid not touching, rubbing, picking or squeezing these annoying problems. However, all the acne squeezing can cause inflammation under the skin’s surface, leading to inflamed acne. This is why it is crucial to refrain from touching, rubbing or squeezing your acne and leave this to the professionals. If you really have to squeeze it then it’s definitely recommended to use cystic acne extractions and not your hands

6. Bacteria

The excessive secretion of sebum by the sebaceous glands creates a livable and ideal environment for bacteria (P.acne) to grow. This is a leading cause for inflamed acne, swelling, redness and acne pus. Some people believe that acne happens when we don’t clean our faces or in other words due to unhygienic reasons. However, cleaning our skin too often or using facial cleansing products that are too strong for the skin can actually lead to skin irritation as well as acne.

7. Smoking

As cigarettes contain chemicals that are harmful towards the body, it can also lead to inflamed acne.

8. Sleeping Late Regularly

Our body usually needs at least 6 to 8 hours of rest. If you are someone who regularly sleeps late, your body systems may become malfunctioned. For example, the sebaceous glands overproducing sebum or exfoliation of skin cells happening in a faulty manner. As a consequence, clogged pores and inflamed acne are more likely to occur.

9. From your LifeStyle

We can’t deny the fact that our lifestyles are directly linked to inflamed acne. Certain lifestyles can increase the risks of developing inflamed acne such as the lack of sleep that weakens our immune system to fight against bacteria. Also, not using enough skincare treatments, cleansing our skin incorrectly and bad habits such as frequently touching your face are all risky lifestyles that contribute to inflamed acne.

Now that we have a better understanding of the causes of acne, let’s start practicing the good habits to reduce the risks of developing inflamed acne and make our way towards achieving a smooth and acne free skin!
